The day
was truly blessed blue clear sky and a slight breeze.
We were only allowed to set up after the Dunn's Run had moved out which
set us back an hour. The Colour Guard and National Anthem were sung by a
high school student , followed by speeches by city officials and a
senator and we were rolling.
Big
Daddy D was M.C did a great ''Jumping Jack Flash'' performance in
between sets on stage, helping out on congas,
giving the sponsors their due recognition and
announcing the acts.
'4Today Only',
made up of muso's from 3 different bands,
opened, then they were joined by Tony Wilson,
a spectacular act featuring lots of energy - back flips and
handstands were the order of the day. The music was excellent
considering they had never played together before it was a case of ''here
on bass is what’s your name again''?
Rannoch Moore, Irish and Scottish act, entertained the crowd to some
fine fiddle playing ,fife, drum and other
instruments, Tarra Guerra had also played in '4 Today
Only' as well as Tom Corday played bass in
both acts, John Bainbridge in kilt and all, and myself on drums
completed the show.
Haze, a hip hop band out of Hollywood, who provided the drum kit and
bass rig for all to use, put in a lot of energy into their show and got
a good response from the younger set, they played all originals, some
from their new CD they
kept the lyrics clean and proved that you don't need
four letter words to impress anyone!
Vesper Sparrow, one of my favourites, all girl original, lots and lots
of energy, turned a lot of heads and opened ears -
a very bright future ahead for them. Although their set was short it had
sufficient impact on the crowd.
Prism we were joined for two songs by Dave Camp on keys who gave the
opening song ''Knocking on Heaven’s Door'', that special ambiance that
made it a good opener for the concert for the people who lost their
lives on 9/11/01. Dave
did one more song ''Slow Down'' an old Beatles song, We ended our set
with Freebird, another classic rock/spiritual song. The crowd were magic
.
Dave Camp Band took the stage and did their own brand of mixed
/Louisiana blues - very up tempo and much
enjoyed by the crowd. They will definitely be featured in future events.
They all did a fantastic job and earned a some new fans along the way.
Hello/Goodbye - clearly the crowd pleasers apart from some technical PA
problems - ''rocked''. Their precision playing and singing proved that
they were no ordinary tribute band. I feel that John Lennon would have
been proud [as well as the others] of their dedication .They closed
their set with ‘Give Peace a Chance’ and invited up all the musos that
had played - what a spectacular ending; so much emotion and good will.
Christine Luther closed the night for the Deerfield Beach Chamber of
Commerce. Her set was unfortunately chopped down to 5 songs as the
concert had run late due to a late start - even Hello/Goodbye and Prism
had to chop off
a few songs. However Christine’s set, all be it short, was well
received and her solo ending of ''Stairway to Heaven'' was very well
received also.
In closing, I don't yet know the financial side but musically and
spiritually for the bands and the fantastic crowd, we all had a good
time. ''We Care'' proved just that you don't have to be an American to
feel like an American.
Steve Howes, Senga Doran and the staff of the George and Dragon, Garry
Prior of Good Hope Security, Nash Productions , Big Daddy D'
Entertainment, the City of Deerfield Chamber of Commerce, Prism Music
Inc. and Dunn's Run (who pledged $ 1000.to the cause) made the concert
a success. We thank Mr. J.R. Dunn not only for his generous contribution
but also allowing us to join in on what was his day fundraiser for the
Boys and Girls Club of America.
