THE STORY
OF EXPATBOXES Expatboxes is run by Susan Ubl and her team in Devon, UK.
They have all been expats themselves and know only too well what the Englishman/woman abroad misses! Susan, who spent 20 years living abroad with her engineer husband, remembers how anyone going back to England was always asked to bring back the old favourites for everyone – they would stagger back with their luggage laden with Golden Shred marmalade, Branston pickle etc. She realised that through the world wide web she had the perfect medium to supply the expats cravings.
Expatboxes
full of McVitie’s digestive biscuits, Heinz salad cream, Cadbury’s
chocolate, PG Tips tea, Walker’s Crisps,
Heinz baked beans, HP
sauce and other culinary delights are winging their way to far flung
places all over the world. A range of hampers was devised after careful
consideration, featuring familiar brand names and labels, designed to
provide both the taste and the sight of home. The packaging, too,
reflects a patriotic theme – the unique Expatboxes hampers are
emblazoned with a Union Jack, a small detail appreciated by Brits living
abroad when they open their box! The highly professional team pride
themselves on giving their customers personal, efficient service.
A range of Union Jack themed souvenirs have also proven extremely popular, with the ‘Lifeline Box’ (Union Jack mug, tea towel, key ring, pen, bottle opener, McVitie’s Digestive and Rich Tea biscuits, Tetley tea bags and a bar of Cadbury’s chocolate) one of their best selling items. For the homesick, there is the ‘Photos from Home’ section, with beautiful shots of the rolling Devon countryside. The thriving Internet company is constantly adding new ‘boxes’ to the original range, such as the ‘Big Match Box’ full of crisps, savoury snacks, chocolate, a Union Jack bottle opener for the local beer and even a packet of Alka Seltzer for the morning after! Seasonal hampers are also available, with Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Valentines Day all catered for. Christmas hampers are extremely popular – Expatboxes call it ‘Sending the British Christmas Abroad’. All the ingredients of the traditional British Christmas dinner, including crackers, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding are boxed up and sent off to far flung parts of the world so that the recipients can enjoy their traditional British Christmas dinner wherever they are.
